Web Log for George Clay

It has been over a year since my last entry; but I have been very busy. I relocated from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma, where I am building a house, along with working a new job. Search4Paws had a very good year, we have over 700 breeders with listings.

I have been slowly making changes to Search4Paws.com. It has mostly been behind the scenes improvements. I will be adding "thumbnail" pictures in the next few days, along with auto resizing of uploaded listing photos.

I have decided that my next major task will be to install a program that will automatically resize images that are uploaded. I have been noticing a lot of images that are oversized, and they do not display very well. I have found that the best size for pictures is 320 pixels wide.

I haven't made an entry in quite a while. We were quite busy with 2 litters of Corgi puppies. I finally added horses to the site; I think the next species I add will be rabbits. If anyone has a request, feel free to ask, at admin@search4paws.com .

I have been working on optimizing search4paws for search engines. It looks like my efforts are starting to work. An MSN search on "free pet classifieds" www.search4paws comes up at the 8th position on the first page; "free pet search" shows up on the 3rd page. We are also moving up in the rankings on Yahoo, and google. I hired an SEO expert that I found on www.guru.com. That was money well spent. I will continue my work on this and hopefully soon will be on the first page of Yahoo, and Google.

Will the debate on vaccines never end, for both humans and dogs. I have found studies on both sides of the fence, one will say vaccines are harmless, and do a great job, the next will say they do no good, and cause irrepairable harm. I have to err on the side of caution for the safety of my family. I know there is a chance my dog will have a reaction to the vaccine, but I'm willing to take that chance if my family is safer. We live in a semi-rural area, and recently had a visit from a rabid raccoon. We knew it was rabid, because it was trying to get in the house in the middle of the day. I was thankful that the dogs were all penned up, and up to date on their rabies vaccine.

I read a post today in one of the news groups that I belong to. The person was going on about how dog search engines are evil. I get so frustrated with these people. Online pet search engines and classifieds are not good or evil, they are a tool. How that tool is used determines it's value. I personally like them (I guess that is why I created one). I hope that www.search4paws.com is used only for good; attaining that goal can be difficult. How can I tell if a breeder is reputable? I can not visit every breeder that posts a pet. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

10/2/2005 I am constantly working on Search4Paws. My next big project will be to add zip code distance searching. Some smaller tasks will be to add some more species, like horses, and rabbits. I really would like Search4Paws to be an all inclusive, online pet classifieds and search engine.

10/1/2005 This is an area for me to discuss what I'm doing with search4paws, interesting information that I have found, or any topic that I feel like ranting about.
